Benefits of Goat Milk Soap

by Jennifer Keel on Apr 25 2024
People who are looking for natural alternatives to mass-produced soaps are increasingly turning to organic goat milk soap. It has a range of benefits and can help you lead a more natural and healthier bathing and cleansing routine. What is natural goat milk soap? Goat’s milk soap is a bar of soap that has goat’s milk in the formula. As with other natural soaps, goat’s milk soap is made from lye that is then mixed with oils and fat. The goat’s milk also contributes to the amount and composition of the fats in the soap. It creates a bar that is soft and natural, and that has a range of added benefits for your skin compared to soaps made from other materials. What are the benefits of goat milk in soap? Goat milk is full of vitamins and minerals which provide your skin with a range of benefits, as well as citric acids, antioxidants and enzymes that all play a part in nourishing, healing and soothing your skin. Goat milk is packed full of natural proteins, glycerin and fatty acids. It is a natural moisturizer and can be easily absorbed through the skin. This creates an effective moisture barrier and helps to keep the skin soft and smooth. Because of its hydrating properties, goat milk soaps don’t dry out your skin as water-based soaps can. Goat milk is also rich in alpha-hydroxy acids that can gently remove dead skin cells, revealing the smoother cells underneath. This can help to reduce irritation, particularly if you have any kind of skin condition. Water-based soaps perform the same function by including harsh chemicals in their ingredients that can damage your skin. Goat milk soap removes dead skin cells without causing irritation or leaving your skin overly dry. Goat milk has a different molecular structure to cow milk and many people with cow milk sensitivity prefer it. Goat milk can be immune boosting if you drink it, and it’s widely believed that if it’s used topically it can provide relief for skin conditions such as eczema. Is goat milk soap good for skin? Using goat milk soap feeds and soothes your skin, giving it a daily boost to help it cope with the stresses and strains of everyday life. As a purely natural ingredient, it doesn’t subject your skin to harsh chemicals that can strip your skin of essential oils and leave you irritated. Compared to other soaps, our homemade goat milk soap is made with full cream rather than water. This means it’s rich in all kinds of natural ingredients that soothe and feed your skin. Whereas water-based soaps can be drying, goat milk soap is actually moisturizing. This means goat milk soap works as both a cleanser and moisturizer for the hands and whole body. Goat milk is also rich in Vitamin A which has been shown to reduce the visible signs of ageing, such as deep lines and wrinkles, when it’s applied to your skin. Goat milk soap contains fewer ingredients than water-based soaps and is free of harsh chemicals that can damage and irritate your skin. Goat milk soap is gentle and hypoallergenic. When you use goat milk soap you are feeding and moisturizing your skin as well as cleaning it. Can goat milk soap ease eczema or dry skin? Because it’s rich in both lactic acid and gentle alpha-hydroxy acids it works as a natural exfoliant, removing dead skin cells to reveal the healthier younger skin cells that lie underneath. Lactic acid from goat milk also contains probiotics. In fact, oral probiotics that are used as a gentle topical treatment for eczema in children have been shown to be effective. It’s these same lactic acids found in goat milk soap that are believed to help eczema sufferers. Lactic acid in goat milk combines with natural oils and fats to nourish and feed your skin. They help to strengthen your skin barrier and seal the moisture in. Well-hydrated skin can be more resistant to eczema flare-ups. Goat milk soap is a gently effective way to soothe your eczema while lowering the risk of future outbreaks. Why is goat milk soap good for acne? Unlike cow’s milk, goat milk is effective at combatting breakout-prone skin. Because it contains natural ingredients that gently exfoliate your skin, it can reduce the risk of an acne breakout. It also has a number of antimicrobial properties that can effectively reduce, and in some cases even prevent breakouts altogether. Studies have shown that drinking goat milk releases anti-inflammatory cytokines into the body. Using goat milk soap on your skin may have similar benefits, helping to reduce inflammation and lowering the risk of acne. Goat milk is rich in vitamin A and selenium, and both are essential for repairing damaged skin tissue. This is essential to keep skin healthy and to prevent clogged pores that can lead to acne breakouts. Tallow is a nutrient rich, perfectly natural ingredient that has long been valued for its skin care properties. It is rich in fatty acids and other nutrients that can help to nourish and moisturize the skin. When applied to the skin, tallow can help to create a barrier that locks in moisture and prevents it from evaporating. Beef Tallow also contains a high amount of stearic acid, which is a type of saturated fatty acid that is known for its ability to help retain moisture in the skin. In addition to its moisturizing properties, tallow also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects on the skin. These properties may help to reduce redness, swelling, and other signs of irritation, and may also help to protect the skin from environmental stressors that can cause dryness and damage. Beef Tallow is believed to have a number of benefits for the skin, including providing moisture and helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. What Should I Use for Anti-Aging Benefits?

by Jennifer Keel on Apr 22 2024
Let's face it, aging is natural. Over time, we all develop fine lines on our skin, our skin becomes thinner, drier, and our skin spots mark memories from our time in the sun. But not all aging is natural, and there are preventative measures that we can do to slow down premature signs of environmental aging- and refreshen skin to some of it's youthful glory.   Here are some suggestions for how you can use our products for youthful, healthy skin.   Night-time routine Step 1- Cleanse Try oil cleansing with the Farm Girl Cleansing Oil.  The top layer of skin is beneficial and contains the hydro-lipid-barrier and acid mantle. Meaning it is your skin's waterproof seal, helping the skin retain water and shielding you from foreign substances trying to enter your body. The acid mantle is the natural layer of acidic oils on the skin that fights acne.  When harsh soaps and cleansers are used on the skin they often strip this barrier and it causes dry irritated skin, more sensitive skin, dermatitis, rashes, acne, or it leads to an overproduction of oil in the skin as the skin tries to compensate. Oil cleansing improves the skin’s ability to regulate oil production and can moisturize and nourish the skin as it cleanses it.  As oil attracts oil, it is really effective in removing makeup as well as grease and grime from the day. It’s also easy and effective to do! Here’s a quick tutorial on how to oil cleanse.   Step 2- Sculpt  While the skin is still saturated with the cleansing oil, perform a gua sha routine. Here are some examples of gua sha routines you can try.    Step 3- Balance Tone the skin with Pure Rose Facial Toner.  Rose water reduces inflammation, skin redness, show that rose water offers protection against the breakdown of collagen and elastin, and also provides defense against free radicals.    Step 4 - Treat Target skin goals with one of our natural serums. For anti-aging benefits that are nourishing while also evening skin tone, I recommend the Rose Glow Serum. For dry skin, try the Plum Glow Serum.  To target discoloration and dark spots, I recommend trying the Brightening Vitamin C Serum.    Step 5- Moisturize  Moisturize and nourish the skin with Fresh Face Cream.    Morning routine Step 1 - Freshen Rinse the face with water only   Step 2 - Balance Mist on the Toner   Step 3 - Target Apply your serum.    Step 4 - Moisturize Apply cream only if you need extra moisturizing.   Step 5 - Protect Apply a non-nanoparticle zinc oxide cream as a mineral sunscreen. Frequently 2-3 times a week, gently exfoliate the skin with the Wild Rose Facial Cleansing Grains. 1X per week, you can do the Wild Rose + Honey Probiotic Mask, and I would mix it with yogurt or honey for some extra soothing. Additional Suggestions Consider purchasing red light therapy. Here is a link to my favorite red light therapy products. Why try red light therapy? Red Light and Near Infrared Light therapy stimulate your body’s natural healing process at the cellular level. It also stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that helps keep the skin firm and elastic. As we age, collagen production decreases, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. By boosting collagen production, red light therapy can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve skin elasticity.

What Products Are Good For Acne Skin?

by Jennifer Keel on Apr 15 2024
Acne prone skin can spring up from a variety of circumstances, and be challenging to manage. We have several natural strategies to soothe, balance, and keep breakouts under control. Here is our suggested skincare routine for those struggling with unwanted blemishes.  Nighttime Routine Step 1: Cleanse Cleanse the skin with an oil cleanser. We made an oil cleanser just for those with acne prone skin. It contains gentle, skin soothing natural oils to reduce inflammation and bacteria. Check it out here. Why oil cleansing? Won't that make oily acne skin worse? Actually, it might be the very thing your skin needs! Oil cleansing has been a huge game changer for all kinds of skin types as it cleanses the skin without disrupting it’s natural protective barrier. When harsh soaps and cleansers are used on the skin they often strip this barrier and it causes acne flareups, dry irritated skin, more sensitive skin, dermatitis, rashes, or it leads to an overproduction of oil in the skin as the skin tries to compensate. Oil cleansing improves the skin’s ability to regulate oil production and can then improve these conditions.  As oil attracts oil, it is really effective in removing makeup as well as grease and grime from the day. It’s also easy and effective to do! Here’s a quick tutorial on how to oil cleanse.   Step 2: Balance Balance and soothe skin with our Clarifying Toner. This toner is made with Hypochlorous Acid, or HOCl. HOCl is often called nature’s super powerful disinfectant. It is a natural-occurring molecule in the body created by our white blood cells to fend off infection, bacteria, and injury to the skin. When used in skincare, HOCl is effective in treating a variety of skin conditions, including acne and dermatitis. It can soothe skin sensitivities and support against irritation.    Step 3: Treat For mild to moderate cases of acne apply 2-3 drops of the Blue Balance Serum to the entire face. Spot treat acne breakouts and recurring breakout areas with the Clarifying Serum.  For moderate to severe cases of acne, apply 2-3 drops of the Clarifying Serum to the entire face.    The Clarifying Serum is made with oils such as Black Cumin Seed Oil which hydrates, soothes, smooths, and nourishes the skin. It targets fungal infections and blemishes, resulting in a smoother, clearer, and brighter complexion.   The Blue Balance Serum is made with Blue Tansy Flower Oil which is shown to reduce redness and irritation, is anti-inflammatory, and possesses skin clearing and soothing properties.    Step 4: Moisturize If you need a little extra moisture you can also end the day with the Blue Beauty Moisturizer at night. It can be a little heavy on some, so only use a little! Morning Routine Step 1: Freshen Rinse your skin with water. Most skin does not need to be cleansed again in the morning. Over cleansing can lead to dry, irritated skin.    Step 2: Balance Mist the skin with the Clarifying Toner.   Step 3: Treat Apply 2-3 drops of the Clarifying Serum, or the Blue Balance Serum. You can apply the Blue Balance Serum to the entire face and also spot treat heavy acne zones with the Clarifying Serum.      Step 4: Protect Apply a zinc oxide cream.     We have a Clarifying Kit for Acne Prone Skin, which includes our Clarifying Line and a Charcoal Cleansing Bar that you can use on the face and body. Additional suggestions Try using our Green Tea Grains as a gentle mask 1-3 times a week. Apply and leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing with water. Weekly wash your bedsheets, pillowcases, makeup brushes, and sponges.  Consider purchasing red light therapy. Here is a link to my favorite red light therapy products. Why try red light therapy? Red Light and Near Infrared Light therapy stimulate your body’s natural healing process at the cellular level. Most red light therapy devices will have a blue light option. This option is more beneficial for acne as it has a shorter wavelength from red light and penetrates closer to the surface of the skin to kill the bacteria in and around the sebaceous glands.

Healthy Skin Skincare Routine Suggestion

by Jennifer Keel on Apr 09 2024
Don't know where to get started? Here's a general healthy skincare routine that I would recommend for you with our products.   Nighttime routine Step 1: Cleanse Try double cleansing with our Farm Girl Cleansing Oil and Wild Rose Cleansing Grains. We have a bundle with these two. New to cleansing oil? Read more about how to use it here.    Step 2: Balance Mist the skin with one of our natural and gentle toners. Each one of our toners addresses a different skin goal. For general balancing purposes with additional anti-aging benefits, we recommend the Pure Rose Toner. For red, irritated, or acne prone skin, we recommend the Clarifying Toner. For mild cases of acne, I recommend the Clear Balance Toner.  Step 3: Target Skin Goals Apply 2-3 drops of a serum. For average skin types, we recommend trying the Plum Glow Serum (also a discounted option in the Double Cleansing package). See our list of serums here for other skin goals.    Step 4: Moisturize Lightly dab our face creams with 2 fingers. Spread the cream between your fingers and press into the skin around the eyes, mouth, neck, and chest. For most skin types and those looking for additional anti-aging benefits we suggest trying the Fresh Face Cream. For acne prone skin, rosacea skin, or other red, irritated skin types, we recommend trying the Blue Beauty Face Cream. For the skin of children, or those with severe sensitive skin we recommend trying the Tallow + Honey Cream. For the summer months, I would first try recommend using the Serum as your moisturizer instead of one of our creams. The creams can be a little rich for some skin types and are best used for dry skin, or in the winter.  1X per week, you can do the Wild Rose Clay Mask, and I would mix it with yogurt or honey for some extra soothing.   Morning routine Step 1: Freshen Rinse your skin with water. Most skin does not need to be cleansed again in the morning. Over cleansing can lead to dry, irritated skin.  Step 2: Balance Mist the skin with a toner.    Step 3: Target Skin Goals Apply 2-3 drops of our Pomegranate Glow Serum to nourish, prep, and protect your skin for the day. See our list of serums here for other skin goals.    Step 4: Protect Apply a zinc oxide cream.

The Healing benefits of Honey

by Lytle Friels on Jan 06 2024
Honey is a versatile ingredient in skincare due to its natural humectant properties, acting to attract and retain moisture for optimal skin hydration. Rich in antioxidants, honey protects the skin from oxidative stress, contributing to a healthier and more youthful appearance. Its antibacterial and antimicrobial qualities make honey effective in preventing and treating acne by cleansing the skin and inhibiting bacterial growth.            Known for its healing properties, honey soothes and promotes the recovery of wounds, cuts, and burns, making it beneficial for addressing skin irritations. With gentle exfoliating enzymes, honey removes dead skin cells, promoting a smoother complexion without causing irritation. Its moisturizing effect is especially beneficial for dry or dehydrated skin, while also balancing oily skin by regulating oil production without stripping natural moisture.        Furthermore, honey encourages cell regeneration, aiding in the renewal of skin cells for a more youthful and radiant complexion. Its potential for scar reduction underscores its role in overall skin healing. Despite these benefits, individual skin types may react differently, emphasizing the importance of a patch test before incorporating honey into a skincare routine. Cleanse, detoxify, and deodorize with charcoal!

by Lytle Friels on Jan 06 2024
Activated charcoal has gained popularity in skincare for its diverse benefits. With adsorbent properties, it deeply cleanses by attracting and removing toxins, dirt, and oil from the pores, making it effective for unclogging pores and reducing blackheads and whiteheads. It also controls excess oil, making it suitable for those with oily or combination skin, and is often used in acne-targeted products due to its ability to eliminate bacteria and toxins that contribute to breakouts.  Some formulations include fine particles for gentle exfoliation, promoting smoother skin and enhancing texture. Additionally, activated charcoal tightens pores, balances oil production without over-drying, and has natural antibacterial and soothing properties.  While it contributes to detoxification by removing impurities, it's essential to note that individual skin types vary, and a patch test is recommended before extensive use to avoid potential sensitivity or dryness. Moderation in use is emphasized to prevent excessive dryness, and ongoing research explores the long-term efficacy and effects of activated charcoal in skincare. Protect Dry Winter Skin by Layering Your Routine

by Jennifer Keel on Jan 03 2024
In the winter months your skin is exposed to elements that can cause excessive drying and or irritation. To protect and restore dry, dull, or flaky skin- try layering your skincare routine! Layering skincare could be likened to layering clothes as the weather turns colder in winter. It allows allows you to address specific skin concerns with targeted products. If you need extra hydration, you can add a hydrating serum to your routine. If you’re experiencing acne prone skin you can target flareups with an acne targeting serum. When it comes to a skin care routine for dry skin, keep the five tips listed below in mind: Cleanse with a hydrating cleanser that doesn’t disrupt the outer skin layer. Tone with an alcohol-free toner to restore skin pH. Target specific skin concerns with a serum. Moisturize with a nourishing cream to lock in hydration. Protect from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays to prevent sun damage. Let’s get into how you can get the best skincare routine with natural ingredients! Layer 1: A good layering routine all starts with how we cleanse our skin. Many commercial cleansers can be harsh and strip the skin of its natural protective barrier. This can cause a variety of reactions to the skin including over-drying out the skin, acne flareups, irritated skin, more sensitive skin, dermatitis, rashes, or it leads to an overproduction of oil in the skin as the skin tries to compensate. To deeply cleanse the surface of the skin without stripping the skin barrier, try oil cleansing with natural gentle oils. Many oils such as organic jojoba oil can can protect the skin, balance oil production, moisturize and nourishing the skin while cleansing it.  Many people are hesitant to try oil cleansing because they fear it will make their skin oily. However, when done correctly, oil cleansing can actually help to regulate oil production and balances the skin's natural pH levels. As oil attracts oil, oil cleansing can help to remove makeup, dirt, and excess oil without stripping the skin of its natural moisture. The resulting clean, soft, and glowing complexion has inspired many people to switch from traditional cleansers to oil cleansing. Oil cleansing simply involves massaging pure oils into the skin and then rinsing with a clean damp washcloth or cotton round.  Check out our natural cleansing oils here.   Layer 2: After oil cleansing, gently mist the skin with a gentle alcohol free toner. Alcohol based toners can dry out and irritate the skin. One of my favorite ways to tone the face is using pure organic rose water. Rose water is balancing for all skin types and has been used for centuries. As an antioxidant with additional antibacterial properties, it can also improve the skin’s barrier and reduce transdermal water loss thus maintaining hydration for the skin. Browse our gentle toners.   Layer 3: Now that the base of the skin is prepared, next apply a lightweight, nutrient-rich serum. This extra layer maximizes skincare benefits and targets your specific concerns. For anti-aging benefits, try our blend of rosehip, carrot seed oil, and the tamanu oil in Rose Glow Serum. To fade discoloration and promote an even skin tone, try our Vitamin C serum, Brightening. To target acne spots, our Clarifying serum has black cumin seed oil, broccoli seed oil, and cajeput. Our other serums like Plum Glow, Blue Balance, and Emerald Glow all provide moisture while targeting age spots, mild acne flareups, and dry sensitive skin.  Choose your natural + skin nourishing serum.   Layer 4: A good cream not only adds moisture to the skin, but locks in hydration from escaping as well. Unlike synthetic ingredients, organic grass-fed tallow is bio-compatible with the skin. This means that tallow can prevent dryness at the cellular level without disrupting the skin's barrier and causing irritation. As it also contains high levels of linoleic acid, which helps to reduce inflammation and keep the skin barrier intact, it is an ideal choice for those with dry or sensitive skin. It also is rich in essential fatty acids. Fatty acids are essential for maintaining healthy, hydrated skin and can help reduce dryness and flaking. These fatty acids help to attract moisture while also locking it in for lasting hydration.  We recommend trying a tallow based cream from our collection as follows: Sensitive, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis prone skin: Fragrance Free Tallow + Honey Cream Mature skin, or skin looking for anti-aging benefits: Fresh Face Cream Acne prone, or irritated skin: Blue Balance Cream   Layer 5: While the sun’s rays may not feel as strong in the winter, that doesn’t mean they aren’t working just as hard! The sun’s UV rays are a big factor in creating premature signs of aging such as discoloration, sunspots, fine lines, and wrinkles. To protect yourself from these UV rays, sun protection should be worn all year long.  For natural solutions for sun proaction many turn to zinc oxide. Non-nanoparticle zinc oxide effectively and safely blocks and reflects the sun's rays. It can be mixed with natural plant oils that are shown to provide a range of protection for added benefits. We have a range of natural zinc oxide creams and lotions that can be used at the end of your skincare routine.  Check them out here.

The Benefits of organic tallow + goat milk soap?

by Jennifer Keel on Oct 17 2023
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jennifer Keel (@pretty_farmgirl)     Are you on the hunt for a cream that can soothe sensitive, dry, or irritated skin? Look no further – my top recommendation is organic grass-tallow. As someone who has battled eczema and psoriasis for years, I can personally vouch for the transformative power of tallow-based skincare. Let's dive into the world of tallow, its compatibility with our skin's biology, and its incredible ability to moisturize and nourish without irritation. Tallow: A Game Changer for Troubled Skin Tallow, historically a primary soap ingredient, has made a significant comeback. This old-fashioned remedy is once again in the spotlight for its unique skin benefits. One of the standout features of tallow is its compatibility with our cells' biology. This makes it easily absorbed and helps regulate oil production, making it ideal for those with sensitive skin. Tallow not only moisturizes but also nourishes the skin, all while being gentle and non-irritating. Of course, everyone's skin is unique, so it's wise to conduct a patch test before applying tallow-based products all over. Now, let's explore why tallow is worth the hype. Five Reasons to Love Tallow-Based Skincare Historical Healing: Tallow was the cornerstone of soap for centuries until it was replaced by cheaper oils. We continue to use this age-old recipe for its unparalleled benefits. Benefits of Goat Milk in Soap

by Jennifer Keel on Feb 07 2023
People who are looking for natural alternatives to mass-produced soaps are increasingly turning to organic goat milk soap. It has a range of benefits and can help you lead a more natural and healthier bathing and cleansing routine. Using goat milk soap feeds and soothes your skin, giving it a daily boost to help it cope with the stresses and strains of everyday life. As a purely natural ingredient, it doesn’t subject your skin to harsh chemicals that can strip your skin of essential oils and leave you irritated. 3 Top Benefits of Goat Milk Soap: Gentle for Sensitive Skin: Goat’s milk soap is generally considered safe for those with sensitive skin. It doesn't disturb the skin's acid mantle barrier like other cleansers. [1] People with certain skin conditions, including eczema and psoriasis, particularly have low lipid levels in their skin membranes. To improve their dry skin, it is important to use products rich in fatty acids and cholesterol, and goat milk skincare items can be a great solution for them. [2] Not only does it provide relief for skin issues like eczema and psoriasis, but goat milk soap also contains minerals that strengthen the structure of cells for healthy skin regeneration over time. Natural Exfoliator: Goat Milk contains alpha hydroxy acids such as lactic acid to gently exfoliate dead skin cells. This lactic acid is a naturally occurring and gentle alpha-hydroxy acid or (AHA). It naturally adds probiotics, and exfoliates your skin. It benefits the skin by removing the dead skin cell layer from the top, giving space for newer cells to emerge from beneath. [2] Naturally Moisturizing: Most commercially made cleansers often include harsh surfactants that can not only reduce the moisture of the skin but may also destroy its natural oils. As a result, you may feel your skin feeling drier and tighter than usual. [2] Goat milk is on contrast moisturizing, with its power lying in its combination of fatty acids which strengthen your skin barrier and seal moisture in. [3] Goat Milk Kefir: Goat milk kefir is another way to utilize goat milk to its maximum potential, as it is packed with probiotic microbes that can reduce inflammation and also assists in improving skin barrier function. These probiotics along with vitamins and minerals contribute to deeply nourishing, and moisturizing the skin. [4]

No Injections or Chemicals Needed - 15 Natural Anti-Aging Secrets That Work

by Jennifer Keel on Jan 18 2023
There are several things both internal and external that cause our skin to age. Intrinsic aging is determined by our genes. It is part of the natural aging process that results in our skin becoming thinner and drier.  Extrinsic aging is aging that is caused by our environment and other factors. These factors are ones that we can influence, and by making changes we can prevent our skin from aging prematurely. [1] Some of these factors that can contrite to this premature aging include: exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, like sunlight smoking squinting, smiling, frowning lack of sleep pollution stress excessive cosmetics poor diet [2]  In this blog we will talk about 15 different adjustments that can assist in avoiding this premature aging. Keep in mind as you read these tips that as you age, your skin naturally becomes drier and more prone to flaking. This typically begins as you reach 40. When skin is dry, skin concerns like wrinkling, creping, sagging and flaking appear exaggerated because the skin lacks moisture.  That's why keeping your skin moisturized is important! Here are 5 Lifestyle adjustments to prevent premature aging:  Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables may help prevent damage that leads to premature aging. A diet containing lots of sugar or other refined carbohydrates can accelerate aging. Limit intake of diuretics. Coffee and alcohol are diuretics that inhibit the absorption of water, making you thirstier, and your skin dryer. And as we know, dry skin leads to faster skin aging. You don’t have to cut them out completely, but enjoying them in moderation will play a major role in how fast your skin ages. A suggestion is to replace coffee with green tea as green tea is packed full of health-promoting compounds. Regularly drinking green tea can help you lose weight and reduce your risk of several diseases, including diabetes, heart disease and cancer, all of which can help give your skin a healthy glow Quit smoking. Substances in tobacco smoke can change the structure of your skin leading to premature aging. These substances break down collagen and elastic fibers in your skin, leading to sagging, wrinkles and a hollow, gaunt face. [reference] Get plenty of sleep. During sleep, your skin’s blood flow increases, and the organ rebuilds its collagen and repairs damage from UV exposure, reducing wrinkles and age spots. It’s called beauty sleep for a reason! Limit long, hot showers. Too much time in the sauna and hot showers causes skin to be excessively dry. This dryness is worsened if you are the type to rigorously wipe your body dry with a towel instead of patting it gently. https://navanskincare.com/blogs/news/10-surprising-habits-that-are-aging-your-skin Consider lowering the temperature and eventually work yourself down to a few minutes in the shower with the water as cold as it will go. When you become a pro- try an ice bath! These are cold-water plunges that are a form of cryotherapy, which involves using cold to treat various issues. When you get out of the cold plunge, your vessels dilate, giving your skin a glow. Because of this, Laura DeCesaris (a functional medicine expert) says it's theorized that ice baths can "reduce skin inflammation and wrinkle appearance over time.” They can help reduce inflammation and swelling, sore muscles, help your central nervous system. This can take a little bit of getting used to but it's well worth it! [3] 5 skincare routine adjustments to prevent premature aging: Avoid commercially made soaps. They contain many unnatural, harmful ingredients that can strip the oils from your skin. The FDA has stated that the majority of cleansers are actually made with synthetic detergent products.  Cleanse your skin gently. Scrubbing your skin clean can irritate your skin. Irritating your skin accelerates skin aging. After a wash, pat dry your skin.  Apply a facial moisturizer every day. Moisturizer traps water in our skin, giving it a more youthful appearance. Massage your face and neck daily. This can help to help promote blood flow, increase collagen production and prevent wrinkles from forming.  Try Gua Sha. This is an Ancient Chinese massage practice that involves using a jade or rose quartz stone and moving it across the skin. It helps to increase circulation, help drain lymphatic drainage, tone the skin, and give an overall lift to the skin. As you glide the stone across your skin, you are de-puffing it and bringing new blood into your skin. When new blood is present, cell regeneration happens more quickly, which makes it easier for your skin to repair itself. Our body has the heart to pump the blood throughout for our circulatory system however, our lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump. So our skin needs to be manually massaged to get it moving! Many notice less puffiness and an overall face lift- it’s the cheapest face lift you’ll find. 5 natural remedies to incorporate into your skincare products: Use products with Vitamin E. Vitamin E is called a powerhouse for protecting against skin damage that may lead to fine lines and wrinkles. It is high in antioxidants, and it affects blood circulation. A 2013 study stated that Vitamin E works as an antioxidant delaying wrinkles.  Use moisturizers with organic tallow as the base. Tallow is believed to prevent dryness at the cellular level while being non-comedogenic meaning that it will not clog pores. It assists in protecting the skin's moisture barrier, and it also contains vitamin E, which as we learned previously is a hero for anti-aging.  Use products that contain Aloe vera. A 2009 study suggested that taking a daily aloe vera gel supplement significantly reduced the appearance of wrinkles in just 90 days. And in a 2015 study researchers found that applying aloe gel to the skin significantly reduced the appearance of wrinkles and also added collagen and hydration. [resource] Use products that contain Green Tea. Green tea is rich in antioxidants known as EGCG, which which helps battle wrinkles and increases cell turnover. [2014 study] Use products that act as carriers for anti-aging essential oils. Here are some essential oils that may help improve the appearance of wrinkles when used in different combinations with a carrier: frankincense geranium helichrysum jojoba lavender neroli pomegranate rose Try our anti-aging collections! We have designed our Fresh Face Cream with tallow, jojoba oil infused with rose, aloe, and lavender, as well as several drops of frankincense to combine in a face cream that is packed with anti-aging benefits and delicate for sensitive skin.  Our natural Rose Glow Serum is another anti-aging powerhouse. Rosehip oil is high in antioxidants and helps to repair cells and boost collagen all of which work to prevent fine lines and wrinkles. It also contains tamanu oil which is another anti-aging hero that reduces the appearance of age spots. To use, massage a few drops into clean skin. Apply in the morning or evening and enjoy the glow. We also have an entire Anti-Aging kit for you with the Rose Glow Serum mentioned above, a Wild Rose toner, and a Gua Sha for you to try so you too can benefit from that natural face lift. Traditional Fragrances vs Essential Oils in Skincare

by Jennifer Keel on Jan 11 2023
I began to pull away from products with fragrance years ago when I would notice a connection between migraines and perfumes. After the birth of my second child, I developed skin sensitives, psoriasis, and eczema. I noticed that after using most skincare and cosmetic products I would have flareups. The connection was that most of these contained harsh chemicals, one of which turned out to be an ambiguous listing that you see often on product ingredients- “fragrance”.  In my search for answers, it turned out that I am not the only one with these reactions, and there is research behind it. I wanted to share some of my findings with you, along with the alternatives to fragranced skincare. Fragrance Almost every skincare product contains some fragrance. What does that mean? When you see “fragrance” on a item, it is a blend of dozens, sometimes even hundreds, of chemicals. Some of the items in the blend may be natural, but most are lab created. [1]  The reason that there is no regulation on labelling each item in these fragrant blends is because of a law that under U.S. regulations allows companies to consider these blends as “trade secrets”. Essentially the scent is a trademark for their product and does not have to be disclosed. [2] What about unscented products? Even they may contain fragrance ingredients. This is because the oils and fats that are included in some cosmetics have an unpleasant aroma that the manufacture then covers with just enough fragrance to mask the unwanted scent without giving off a traceable one. It may be “unscented” but it is not “fragrance free”. [2] But are these fragrance chemicals really adverse?  Notice this information from a 2016 study of the general population surveyed: [3] 34.7 % of the population reported one or more types of adverse health effects from exposure to one or more types of fragranced products.  The most common types of adverse effects were as follows:  18.6 % respiratory problems 16.2 % mucosal symptoms 15.7 % migraine headaches 10.6 % skin problems 8.0 % asthma attacks 7.2 % neurological problems 5.8 % cognitive problems 5.5 % gastrointestinal problems 4.4 % cardiovascular problems 4.0 % immune system problems 3.8 % musculoskeletal problems 1.7 % other In that same study: 46.4 % were not aware that a “fragrance” in a product is typically a chemical mixture of several dozen to several hundred chemicals 64.6 % were not aware that fragrance chemicals do not need to be fully disclosed on the product label or material safety data sheet.  67.3 % were not aware that fragranced products typically emit hazardous air pollutants such as formaldehyde. Interestingly, safecosmetics.org reports that the International Fragrance Association lists 3,059 materials that are reported as being used in fragrance compounds. [4] Of these 3,059 ingredients, some have evidence linking them to health effects including:  cancer reproductive toxicity allergies sensitivities For these reasons, some nations regulate the use of more than 1,600 chemicals in cosmetics, but the FDA has banned or restricted only nine for safety. [5] The FDA itself comments:  ”Some components of fragrance formulas may have a potential to cause allergic reactions or sensitivities for some people.  The FDA does not have the same legal authority to require allergen labeling for cosmetics as for food. So, if you are concerned about fragrance sensitivities, you may want to choose products that are fragrance free, and check the ingredient list carefully.” [2] Many of us, myself included wish to be able to use skincare products that work- but also smell nice. No one wants to smell gross! So what are some alternatives? Essential Oils A 2021 study on "Essential Oils and Their Individual Components in Cosmetic Products" states:  Essential oils and their individual components are a family of substances with increasing interest for cosmetic industry.  This is the result of their many biological properties, including antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory or antioxidant one, which can be exploited for supporting health, beauty, and wellness. [6] This has pushed the essential oil usage range beyond the fragrance world, and nowadays they are widespread in products for hair and skin care as well as natural preservatives in many formulations, leading to an almost endless lists of uses which is continuously growing. [7]  I have found that essential oils are an excellent alternative to synthetic fragrances for not only creating a pleasant smell in skincare products, but also for their many benefits!  When my eczema and skin sensitivities became so severe and decided to take matters into my own hands, I began by taking an herbal studies course as well as a botanical course. This taught me how to use natural ingredients in their proper proportions to create my own skincare. I wanted to create something that would be beneficial for my skin and still have a delicate and natural scent! For my personal skincare products that I began to make (and now share with you) I learned that it all starts out with what oils you are using, so I searched until I found the highest quality essential oils.  Next came deciding what oils to use. The oils I chose to use on the face are different than those for the body. The reason being that there are specific oils that have benefits for the delicate facial skin- such as anti-aging, calming, rejuvenating.  For example for facial skin- oils like lavender, frankincense, and blue tansy are very beneficial.  Lavender has shown to be calming and healing. Frankincense is a powerhouse for anti-aging  Blue tansy is great for cooling and calming the skin. With these oils, I am very careful with the amounts and kinds I use, as too much could be irritating as essential oils are known to be potent. I only use their proper proportions as I learned in the courses I took. For especially portent oils, we infuse them or their herbs into carrier oils for a set amount of time. This way we can maximize their benefits without harming the skin.  I also love hydrosols as they take the plant itself and distill the herbs to get the benefits through a mild water. A good rose hydrosol for example will act as a mild astringent while hydrating and soothing dry skin. It has shown to be anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, balancing, calming, and aids circulation.  For my soaps I use an essential oil calculator to portion how much oil I use. I always choose to ration these portions on the mild side which is one of the reasons my soap scents are gentle, because I prefer to err on the side of the safety to attain optimal benefits and scents without risking irritation.   I these soaps I use oils like lavender, Palmarosa, Geranium, and bitter almond for their skin benefits and scent.  By using essential oils in my skincare  I can ensure that I use something that is free of toxins, infused with therapeutic benefits, and is kinder on my skin than artificial fragrances. Not only do essential oils add a delightful aroma but they can also help nourish the skin, hydrate, reduce wrinkles, and give relief from stress and improve mood. My skin has thanked me!

Benefits of Oil Cleansing and Cleansing Grains

by Jennifer Keel on Dec 20 2022
Many traditional face cleaners can strip away the natural oils that protect our skin. If your skin/moisture barrier has been stripped you will likely experience irritation, dryness, tightness in skin, sensitivity, and an increased risk of developing wrinkles. Many cleansers also are loaded with fragrances and other ingredients that can trigger allergies or sensitivities. If you are experiencing any of the above or are just looking for a more natural and gentle way to cleanse your face, try using a cleansing oil or cleansing grain.    Oil Cleansers Why oil cleanse? The top layer of skin is beneficial and contains the hydro-lipid-barrier and acid mantle. Meaning it is your skin's waterproof seal, helping the skin retain water and shielding you from foreign substances trying to enter your body. The acid mantle is the natural layer of acidic oils on the skin that fights acne. Good cleansing oils are made with blends of nourishing pure plant oils (like jojoba seed oil) that will leave your skin feeling soft and healthy. They also won't contain any harsh chemicals or artificial fragrances.  Oil cleansing simply involves using pure oils to thoroughly cleanse the face and then rinsing with a damp washcloth. It can help to remove makeup, dirt, and excess oil without striping the skin of its natural barrier.  Many people are hesitant to try oil cleansing because they fear it will make their skin oily. However, when done correctly, oil cleansing can actually help to regulate oil production and balances the skin's natural pH levels. Our Farm Girl Cleansing Oil is crafted with multiple oils penetrate to dissolve congestion and deep clean, without drying skin. It hydrates and rejuvenates as it gently cleans away makeup. Farm Girl Cleansing oil contains sea buckthorn berry oil- which is packed with omega fatty acids 3,6,7, and 9, antioxidants, carotenoids, and vitamins. It helps to diminish imbalances. It also contains Jojoba Oil which nourishes and conditions thirsty skin, balances oil production and moisturizes the skin. Another oil in this blend is lavender essential oil which is a powerful skin tonic that is restorative and calms. And finally, White Grapefruit essential oil- this unique grapefruit variety is known for its cleansing properties.   Cleansing Grains / Grain Cleansers  Cleansing Grains are another gentle, natural alternative to face washing with harsh chemicals. They are ground from natural ingredients such as oats, almonds, or rice mixed with herbs and natural clays. They provide an opportunity to use a gentle and natural exfoliation that softens the skin’s texture, purifies its surface, and helps deeply nourish skin cells. With regular use of cleansing grains, you’ll quickly find it easier to keep your skin balanced and hydrated, leaving you with a more youthful appearance and inner glow. With a wide variety of active ingredients, each grain offers benefits tailored to its own unique blend. From the gentle exfoliation of oats and almonds to the detoxifying properties of bentonite clay, cleansing grains provide natural alternatives to chemical exfoliants that can be harsh on sensitive skin. Cleansing grains help unclog pores, reduce oil buildup, and address any number of skin issues while offering gentle exfoliation. Ideal for all skin types, when used correctly they can help reveal softer, smoother, healthier skin with fewer blemishes and imperfections. To use, you simply mix the grains (or powder) with a small amount of water before use. This creates a paste like  gentle exfoliating solution of minerals and antioxidants that you massage into the skin to cleanse.  We offer Wild Rose Cleansing Grains and Green Tea + Coconut Milk Cleansing Grains. Our Wild Rose Cleansing Grains contain organic oatmeal, white clay (Kaolin), rose petals, lavender buds, almonds, and poppy seeds. Our Green Tea + Coconut Milk Cleansing Grains contain organic green tea leaf, coconut milk, white clay (Kaolin), colloidal oats, pearl powder, and lactobacillus probiotic.  We chose these ingredients as: matcha green tea is a powerful source of antioxidants that rejuvenate the skin and make dull skin look healthier. It can soothe irritation and combat signs of aging. Coconut milk has vitamin c and copper that can help maintain the elasticity of the skin. It also combats dryness, soothes the skin, and promotes healthy glowing skin. Oatmeal is used to calm dry, inflamed, and sensitive skin. Kaolin clay gently cleanses and exfoliates. Pearl Powder is rich in minerals and antioxidants. Pearl Powder has been used throughout Asia for thousands of years as a staple to slow signs of aging and fight the appearance of wrinkles. Lactobacillus Probiotic helps soothe and balance your skin microbiome.   If you are looking to double cleanse, simply use a good quality oil cleanser first and then follow with a natural cleansing grain. Continue to moisturize after washing, especially in dry areas.

The Benefits of Tallow in Skincare

by Jennifer Keel on Dec 15 2022
Tallow is a natural fat that has been used for centuries to nourish and protect skin.  Here’s a quick rundown of the key reasons that we will discuss today about why grass fed tallow is a great ingredient to be used in your skincare.  Its easily absorbed into the skin It is moisturizing It helps acne prone skin Tallow is rich in vitamins and minerals  It helps protect your skin So how does it accomplish all this? It’s fatty acids are similar to those found in human skin, making it an ideal ingredient in many skin care products as it provides essential hydration and protection. As a result, tallow is easily absorbed into the skin and won’t leave behind greasy residue like some other oils. Moisturizing Properties  Beef Tallow is an excellent source of fatty acids that act as a powerful moisturizer for the skin. Fatty acids are essential for maintaining healthy, hydrated skin and can help reduce dryness and flaking. Beef Tallow contains stearic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, linoleic acid and other essential fatty acids that help to keep skin soft and supple by providing essential hydration. These fatty acids help to attract moisture while also locking it in for lasting hydration.   Great For Acne Prone Skin In addition to its moisturizing effects, tallow offers several other nourishing benefits for your skin. Many people are unaware of the powerful properties of tallow and its ability to significantly improve acne-prone skin.  Tallow is rich in vitamins A, D, E and K, tallow is known to reduce acne flare-ups and balance oil production. As mentioned previously, it is rich in linoleic acid, a type of omega-6 fatty acid that helps regulate oil production in the skin and prevent breakouts. It is also important to mention that it is non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog your pores. With regular use of tallow on your skin, you will start to notice softer, more supple skin and an improved complexion overall.  Tallow Is Rich In Vitamins And Minerals  In addition to its essential fatty acids, tallow is also rich in vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for healthy skin such as Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E and B-complex vitamins. These vitamins work together to promote cell regeneration which can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles while providing antioxidant protection against free radical damage caused by the environment. Additionally, these vitamins help keep the skin looking youthful and radiant while providing vital nutrients necessary for healthy cell growth.    Tallow Helps Protect Your Skin  Beef Tallow contains powerful antioxidants that helps create a protective barrier on your skin that helps to protect against environmental damage like air pollution, sun exposure and harsh winter conditions. This barrier helps lock in moisture while also helping keep out environmental irritants that can cause inflammation or redness. Free radicals caused by sun exposure and other environmental factors cause premature aging, so tallow’s antioxidant properties are another way that it. can help keep your skin looking younger longer. Additionally, tallow contains vitamin A, which helps boost cell turnover rates and promote collagen production – both of which also contributes to youthful-looking skin.  Some of the common questions people have about using tallow are: Can you put tallow on your face? Yes! Tallow is a fantastic addition to your skincare routine as it’s fatty acids are similar to those found in human skin, making it an ideal ingredient in many skin care products as it provides essential hydration and protection. Does tallow cause acne / is tallow good for helping acne?   Tallow helps those with acne prone skin as it helps regulate oil production in the skin and prevent breakouts. And because it’s noncomedogenic (meaning it won’t clog pores), it makes an ideal ingredient for acne-prone or oily complexions. How long can you store tallow? Tallow at room temperature will have a shelf life of up to 12 months. What is the difference between grass fed tallow and grain fed tallow? Not only is grass fed tallow sourced from animals raised more humanely than those that are grain-fed, but it also contains a far greater number of skin-nourishing vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. When it comes to skin care, not all tallows are created equal. Grass fed tallow contains more skin friendly compounds like conjugated linoleic acid and antioxidants. This is what helps skin retain its natural elasticity, keeping it looking healthy and youthful. Grass fed tallow also includes higher levels of vitamin A which encourages skin cells turnover, helping maintain skin's radiant glow. For a skin care product that works wonders for skin health and appearance, choose grass-fed tallow for best results. The benefits of tallow for skincare are undeniable. With all these amazing benefits, there's no wonder why tallow has become one of the most popular ingredients used today in skincare products! So if you're looking for a natural way to nourish your skin, be sure to look out for products containing tallow next time you shop.  Here at Pretty farm girl we use organic grass fed tallow for our body butters, face creams, and soaps.  Try our ultra moisturizing tallow body butters.
