Some of the first soaps in the first century were made in the Roman Empire with tallow. Many soaps continued to be made with tallow, however in recent decades most commercial soap makers have swapped tallow for vegetable oils such as palm oil. A big factor in this transition was that these vegetable oils are cheaper.

We still use tallow in our soaps because it has a range of benefits for your skin. Not only does it contain beneficial vitamins and antioxidants, but tallow is packed full of the same lipids that are needed for healthy skin. Because tallow and our skin oils share similar concentrations of lipids and other fats, tallow absorbs easily into the skin and doesn’t irritate sensitive skin.
